Conference Information

APSA (Inc.) has invited a number of internationally and nationally recognised speakers in these fields who will address the conference in the form of invited reviews and symposia. As in past years, contributed (refereed) one-page papers and poster presentations will form a major and very important part of the conference. The deadline for submission of one-page papers will be the 15th May 2005. Please register your intention to submit a paper via the “Author’s Registration” button.

In addition, the organising committee will continue the theme of the 2003 Producer Focused Conference sessions, which are planned for one day of the conference. There will also be study tours of the local pork industry held at the end of the Christchurch Conference.

Post APSA Farm Tours

The APSA team in New Zealand has provided what will be an interesting post APSA farms tour. This will enable you to 'get to grips' with a variety of New Zealand production systems, while taking in some of the spectacular South Island scenery of New Zealand.

Day 1
We will be traveling north of Christchurch to visit a 3000 sow outdoor pig unit, which rears all its all progeny on straw bedding. Lunch is at the historic Hurunui Hotel, an icon in North Canterbury, as this country pub has held its license continuously since 1869.

Following lunch, we will visit the unique Hanmer Springs. These natural hot springs are nestled in a valley at the base of the New Zealand Southern Alps. During this brief visit, there will be opportunities at Hanmer for swimming in hot pools, bush walks, tourist shopping and possibly jet boat rides. On our return to Christchurch, our group will visit a winery for you to sample and possibly purchase some of the stunning wines that New Zealand has to offer.

Day 2
We will travel south of Christchurch to an 1100 sow outdoor operation with four radial set-ups to view a novel sow feeding system. The group will then travel West over the Canterbury plains to visit a 190 sow farrow to finish operation. After this, there will lunch at the Homestead Mt Hutt Station, which is situated on an 8000 acre deer farm; and this will provide visitors with a taste of high-country living in Canterbury.

Following lunch, we will follow a scenic route back to Christchurch, with a planned visit to a large dairy operation and a country hotel en-route back to the Convention Centre.

Preferred Accommodation

The APSA secretariat has organised reduced rates for APSA delegates with a number of central city hotels/motels/backpackers to suit a variety of budgets. These hotels/motels/backpackers are all within about a maximum of a ten minute walk to the Convention Centre. When you are making enquiries, please state that you are attending the APSA conference to benefit from these reduced rates.

In regards to the facilities, a number of venues have suites, which is usually a two bedrooms with a shared bathroom 'mini apartment', and it is often more inexpensive than two separate rooms. When making enquiries, talk to them about their available facilities.

One thing delegates need to be aware of is that November is a busy month in Christchurch hence you will need to book early.

We look forward to seeing you at APSA 2005.
